Brief: A redesign for the uninteresting areas of grass around the house and swimming pool, to enlarge the lake and to add colour and interest.
Solution: Close to the house structure is key. Lavender filled parterres create an impressive formal entrance to the house, while yew hedging encloses the swimming pool terrace with its zingy purple and orange summer planting.
The main seating area by the house overlooks sweeping lawns which slope down towards a woodland area with children’s camp on one side, and a lake and stream with deck and pontoon on the other.
In a garden of this size several different styles of planting can be used; lush water loving plants around the lake, large architectural plants and grasses around the pool, mown paths cutting through long grasses and wildflowers at the edge of the woodland, and more classic herbaceous borders and roses around the house to reflect its country setting.
