Brief: The challenge with this small courtyard garden design in Hove was to fit in everything that the clients both wanted and needed. The space isn't very big but the shed had to stay. The hated slippery deck was covering up a change in ground level close to the kitchen extension and the clients didn't want any grass.
Solution: The seating area was lowered to the same level as the house creating a small paved courtyard. Brick raised planters were built so planting could soften the walls, screen the shed and break up the hard landscaping. A bespoke trellis was made to hide the neighbour's ugly fence and for growing scented climbers up. The result is a welcoming evening entertaining space.
The clients chose to do the planting themselves choosing a simple combination of formal topiary for structure and grasses for movement and softness.
